Hard drive almost full. I'm emptying trash. It has more than 2000 items. The trash has not emptied. It has been 2 hours. Help.

Have you tried emptying the trash in Safe Mode?
Otherwise you should use OmniDiskSweeper and find the files that you want to delete. This is a very good app for handling space on your mac.
Relaunch the Finder, then from the Finder menu bar, select
Finder ▹ Preferences ▹ Advanced
and uncheck the box marked Empty Trash securely. Try again to empty the Trash.
