How to best transfer docs/files/photos/... from old Macbook to new MacBookPro but not transfer the slowness of the old one?

I have jut bought a new MacBook Pro. I have set up an admin account but have downloaded any applications in it or any docs. I want to proceed with migrating my docs/files/music/pictures from old MacBook but I'm afraid to transfer the "junk" that made my macbook slow in the first place.

I'm scared of the migration assistant as I'm reading it may not be the best thing to do.

I have time Machine.

What should I select to change over and will it create a new account in my new machine if I use time machine instead of migration assistant?

Thanks in advance!
