INSTALLATION UPDATE DOES NOT FINISH

After hours of waiting the installation of updates such as Iphoto still remains unfinished. I'm unable to restart even if I make a forced quit of the installation process. The next stemp would be to powerdown using the start button but I'm afarid that system file damage may ensue.
