Hi marlon j,

If you are seeing your applications freeze, I would recommend trying the steps in this article:

OS X Mountain Lion: If an app freezes

http://support.apple.com/kb/PH11281

I would especially check out the last 3 steps, including repairing the disk. For more information on that, see this article:

Using Disk Utility to verify or repair disks

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1782

Repairing disk permissions is another good idea:

Disk Utility 12.x: Repair disk permissions

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1452

That article also applies to Mountain Lion.

Hi, in the past I have verified my disk (OK) and reinstalled OS 10.8, and I still have apps freezing - Safari as well as (admittedly memory hungry) photo editing apps. Sometimes it is a short hang, sometimes it is permanent. I have 8GB RAM and about 70GB free on my hard drive, so I don't see why this should be happening. Force quitting apps and restarting my machine is not a solution. What is the cause of the problem, and what are the solutions?

I've pretty much the same hardware set-up as you (Crucial 512GB m4, 16GB of RAM, etc.) and have experienced no problems. I suspect that your problem lies either with the installation of OS X that you have running or, possibly, a failure of the SSD.

Assuming that you have the latest firmware for the SSD, I would first try reinstallling OS X by booting to your Recovery partition (command and R keys held down whilst booting) and see if that remedies the problem. If not, I would call Crucial and let them know that you MAY HAVE a malfunctioning drive.

Good luck,

Clinton
