As always, no "EDIT" button even only 30 seconds after submitting, so I have to treply to my own post.
The title should be "Fan has gone to all-time high speed", because I suddenly realized there is only one fan.
I shut down before going off to work, so there could be no chance of over-heating. When I got home and started up, the fan came on at high speed immediately. When the desktop loadeded, temperature was shows as 27 degrees C, normal for a "cold" system. That means the fan is going high speed no matter what temperature.

My unit runs about 57C and 1800 RPM at idle (internet surfing only) and fan is quiet. Not sure why yours would run fast at start up. Try the SMC reset (unplug unit for 30sec and reconnect and see what happens.
