Referenced Vs. Managed work with Photoshop editing

How Referenced Vs. Managed work with Photoshop editing

1) My photos are saved on a local hard drive

2) IF, When editing with Photoshop i like to save over the original since i never like the original to begin with.

3) Any I make other light changes like filters I do not save over the original.

Where do the Photoshop edit versions go. i tried playing with just one Folder. Imported one folder as managed and one as referenced..... and can't find the edited version? Am I saving it wrong? I tried TIFF I tried Jpeg…..

Also when i imported the folder as a managed file i still saw the original folder under "pictures" does that mean it's on my hard drive twice, once in Pictures and once in the Aperture Library? That would take up too much space.

Thanks in advance, Orly

When you select "Edit in Photoshop" then Aperture will create a copy that is right next to the original RAW file. It will then open Photoshop with this photo selected.

When you're done with the Photoshop edits, you should hit Save in Photoshop. Do NOT do "save as..." or Aperture can't track the file.

No need to worry about where in the file system this file is (which will be a .PSD or .TIFF file depending on your Aperture settings).

Also for the second part of my question 😉

Yes. When you import as a managed file, Aperture copies the original file into the library package. This leaves you with two original files (one in the library and one in the folder).

The idea of managed is to have your original images copied into and kept in the Aperture library package. You can then backup your originals outside the library package and then delete those from your hard drive. 😉

Got it. Thanks!

I just wish i could figure out the Photoshop part.....😢

I want to continue using it while i am learning Aperture..... But the copies desapear POOF. It only reflects if I work in Managed and Save it as "Replace".

The option to 'Replace' sounds like you are using Photoshop Elements?

I run the full version of Photoshop (which doesn't have a 'Replace' command), so I don't know the full extent of the saving options of PS Elements. I do know there are a few preference options for importing and saving which can change the behavior so you might check with the PS Elements help system if that is what you are running.

Also, you might check the thread linked below for some tips:

https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4515547

Note - with the full version of Photoshop (I use CS6); the process is as William specified where one needs to use the 'Save' command to save the file directly back to Aperture to reflect the edits. There is also an Apple provided tip here:

Hope this helps. 😉

THANK YOU SOOOOO MUCH! I will check on those links out.🙂 If nothing else I now know that if i "Save As:.....jpeg" and yes to "Replace" it does reflect in my managed folder. Now the trick will be to also find a way to make it work in Refrenced files since kind of wanted to work with Refrenced.... but we shell see.

The answer is yes I am jusing Elements. I had PS5..... from when i used to be a Photo Journalist in a local paper, then life took me else where. When i got a new iMac a few months ago I decided to try Elements. it's more basic but it works well enough for me. 😉

I used to use the combo of Photoshop 4 then 5 with Picasa as my orgenizer.

I thought Elements would bring both together for me. when it didn't i tired Lightroom, when that didn't work for me..... everyone said get Aperture 😮 I like it better then Lightroom so far But

NEW, NEW, NEW, NEW system for me. But i guess baby steps.😉

No problem.

It sounds like you might have gotten Photoshop Elements from the Mac App Store instead of directly from Adobe's site (if the Organizer function is not included).

Since you want to stay with JPEG files (and Aperture will insist on sending a TIFF or PSD file), you might consider contacting Adobe support to see if they will credit you and allow you to get the version with the Organizer which I know is a simplified version of Adobe Bridge geared toward consumers. It sounds like it would work for your purposes as I am pretty sure you can set the Organizer to be a browser like Bridge and work with the images directly to view, organize and open in PS Elements and then save back to same location as JPEG.

Might be worth a shot if Aperture doesn't work out the way you want. 😉

Thanks, but i do have the Adobe version. i bought Elemets. Yes it does have the orgenizer but when i tried it the first time i set it up it did not work well as i thought it would, so i only stuck to the editing. The orgenizer did not seem user friendly at all, it's not a bad idea to contact them though and see......

I just used Picasa to orgenize and view.

I actually don't mind if it saves is as PSD or Tiff BUT if i do it does not reflect back into Aperture? strange. the only version that reflects back is

"Save As:.....jpeg" and yes to "Replace" it does reflect in my managed folder.😐

I will be reading through the treads you recommended as well as contact Adobe and see.😕

Thanks again, Orly

That doesn't surprise me at all. I've been using PS since version 4 and Adobe has not done very well with designing a nice file browser. They work on an industrial level, but not necessarily easy to work with in many cases.

If PS Elements doesn't have a simple 'File > Save' command (which is what you really want with Aperture), then I think you just need to find the settings that perform the same function.

It should be as simple as:

1. In Aperture run the Edit with Photoshop Elements command

2. Make edits in Photoshop Elements

3. Save file in PS Elements and return to Aperture (and make Aperture window active) to see changes applied to TIFF or PSD version

This should work in either the Managed or Referenced library. In the Managed library, the PS edited file will only be visible in Aperture without digging into the library package. In a Referenced library, the TIFF or PSD file should be located in the same folder as the original file in finder (as mentioned by William).

Good luck! 🙂

I too used to use PS 4 and then 5. When it was time to upgrade last year I chose to get elements. I missed my PS 4 but elements did the job. Like I said I used to use Picasa to organize and view and PS to edit then elements. Three months ago I decided to get an iMac and at the store they said if you have a back ground in photography you should get Aperture it will do both for you. AND HERE WE ARE.

f PS Elements doesn't have a simple 'File > Save' command (which is what you really want with Aperture), then I think you just need to find the settings that perform the same function.

No it does not. The only one I found so far is saving it as jpeg and “Replacing.”

It should be as simple as:

1. In Aperture run the Edit with Photoshop Elements command

2. Make edits in Photoshop Elements

3. Save file in PS Elements and return to Aperture (and make Aperture window active) to see changes applied to TIFF or PSD version

All that was done at set up. What I am not understanding is that the default “save” is .tif and the bottom it says .tiff ?????

But if I save it as the default it does not work. It ONLY works if I change it to jpeg. Honestly I don’t care if it’s jpeg, I work with jpegs all the time, but I do think it’s strange.

This should work in either the Managed or Referenced library. In the Managed library, the PS edited file will only be visible in Aperture without digging into the library package. In a Referenced library, the TIFF or PSD file should be located in the same folder as the original file in finder (as mentioned by William).

For me it ONLY works in managed not in Referenced. In Referenced it does show up in the original file but it does not reflect back to the Aperture projects. 😕 I have a class “OneToOne” on Saturday and will see if they know what the issue is.

Thanks for you help! I will let you know.😉
