Where did iDVD go and why?

Hi Everybody

So I've just created a nice video clip of my God daughter and wanted to burn it onto DVD and give it as a gift. Guess what...Apple took the iDVD off iMovies!! Such fun!

I'd like to know why? This was one of the reasons I bought this laptop to begin with and then the function is just taken away? What will be taken away next? The abitliy to creat a folder?!

I'm beginning to think there was a commerical reason for taking iDVD from iMovies....

disappointed and feel tricked by Apple

Any feedback?

Apple discontinued iDVD and iWeb over a year ago when it dropped it's MobileMe service. It's moving sharing to the cloud. They whys and wherefors have been discussed at length for the last year.

If you have an older Mac that came with iDVD you can use the Software Install disk to do a custom install of iDVD and themes.

If you don't have an older Mac and it's disks you'll have to purcahse a copy of the iLife 09 disk from a 3rd party retailier like Amazon.com: ilife 09: Softwareor eBay.com.

If you have to purchase an iLife disc in order to obtain the iDVD application remember that the iLife 11 disc only provides themes from iDVD 5-7. The Software Update no longer installs the earlier themes when starting from the iLIfe 11 disk nor do any of the iDVD 7 updaters available from the Apple Downloads website contain them.

Currently the only sure fire way to get all themes is to start with the iLife 09 disc:

This shows the iDVD contents in the iLife 09 disc via Pacifist:

You then can upgrade from iDVD 7.0.3 to iDVD 7.1.2 via the updaters at theApple Downloads webpage.
