If you are still running 10.4.1 as your profile states, then any FW 800 drive. There is no "best" but I'd recommend using OWC (www.macsales.com) Mercury Elite Pro Series, G-Tech G Series or Lacie.
I second the nomination of the OWC. It's a great drive and comes pre-formatted for the Mac. Mine has performed flawlessly.
Also agree about the OWC Mercury Elite Pro - have three of their 2 TB drives, the quad interfae model (USB, Firewire 800/400, eSATA) and they are all terrific performers. And OWC has great user support and guarantees.
Thank you for the feedback! I really rely on my imac for lots of things I am working on, and can't even afford to lose access for a couple of days right to replace the internal drive. I am going to check out the hard drive suggestions you have provided. Much appreciated!
your welcome.
