How do I fix my iPhone 5 wifi problems with Airport Extreme?

I have a 5th Gen Airport Extreme (AE) and an all Mac household. We have iPhones, iPads and MacBooks. Ever since I got the Extreme, my iPhone 5 will stop responding on the internet. It still shows as connected, but nothing on the internet responds. The immediate solution is to turn wifi on and off on the phone and everything immediately starts working again.

I believe it's started happening on the iPad 3 as well, but it's hard to tell if I'm just resetting it due to paranoia on unresponsive sites. The AE is set to WPA2 Personal only, and both the 2 & 5ghz radios are set to automatic. Also it's a/b/g/n (Automatic).

I've tried restarting everything multiple times, reset the AE from scratch, and done "Reset Network Settings" on the phone. Nothing has been able to fix it permanently.

The irony is that I switched to the AE after a number of cheap wifi routers that didn't keep a signal. Now I never lose the signal but it refuses to actually show evidence of routing the packets.

Any and all help is much appreciated!

Hi guys! I just "fix" my wifi issues. Ok first of all, if you don't get any signal or low wifi connectivity, fret not!! because first of all, please make sure that you don't have any sort of screen protector on the glass panel at the back of the iPhone. This is usually the root problem for this situation. The screen protector might block the wifi antenna and hence affect your wifi connectivity. Simply just peel off the screen protector OR just cut the screen protector (so that it only covers the aluminum back) and ensure that it does not block the glass panel on the back of the iPhone 5. I hope this help. Alternatively, you can do a hard reset(hold the home buttons and power button for 15 secs) hope this helps! :)

How about at least marking d4rkha1f's post as 'helping you'? I understand your hope that by keeping this open it may somehow influence Apple to fix the 6th Gen, but for all those with previous models, it would be nice to make it easier for them to go straight to the solution and not have to dig through the whole thread. But ultimately it's your threa and your call 🙂

I've been having the same problem not only through my router but on 3G, every time I need it most the web page won't respond then 30 minutes later BOOM it works fast as lightning again. I've found that VPN (found in settings on iphone5) was the cause of my non responsive internet lag e.g. ONAVO in my case, it's a data compressing app which has caused me a world of heartache but now my phone is working 100% better. This might not work for you but it's worth a try.

I am glad to have found this thread, as I too have been having connectivity issues with my AEac (A1521). I've seen this happen across all of our devices connected to the WiFi, so I know it's not iPhone 5 specific.

It seems that the firmware downgrade is the solution. However, I upgraded the firmware to 7.7.1 first thing right out of the box before I configured any other settings. Now that I'm attempting to downgrade to the version that was factory installed (7.7.0 ??), I am not seeing that as an option, either on my Mac or iPhone. There doesn't seem to be a previous version saved anywhere.

Is there a way to obtain archived firmware versions somewhere through the Apple site? (I'm only seeing instructions on how to get the newest version by downloading via AirPort Utility.) If not, is there someone in the community that can post their original version (which apparently can be located in

~/Library/Application Support/Apple/AirPort/Firmware)?

Firmware update 7.6.4 is out:

This update is available for all Apple 802.11n Wi-Fi base stations including AirPort Express, AirPort Extreme, and AirPort Time Capsule. It contains fixes that:

  • Resolve an issue that may cause AirPort Time Capsule to report that the backup disk is in use
  • Resolve an issue that may cause an IPv6 Tunnel error
  • Resolve an issue that may intermittently cause a loss in Wi-Fi connectivity with iOS devices

Note: This firmware update is for all 802.11n AirPort base stations.

Not sure if the third bullet is addressing the issues seen in this thread. I updated to the 7.6.4 version.
