You can only get the seriel number if the ipod is hooked up to itunes. Unless you have the original box the ipod came in.

If you have access to your computer, but not your device
Devices tab
- Open iTunes.
- Open Preferences. (In Mac OS X, choose iTunes > Preferences. In Windows, choose Edit > Preferences.)
- Click the Devices tab.
- Position the mouse over a backup to display the serial number of the backed-up device. iPhone and cellular iPad models also display the IMEI/MEID and Cellular Data Number:
If your device was the last connected to a Windows machine running iTunes, you may be able to identify the SN using the Device Connectivity Tests, as outlined in this article:

This section of the diagnostic report lists all of the devices currently connected. If no device is found, this section will list the device most recently connected. You should see the model of the device, its software version, and "its serial number".
