I have recently purchased pages and my previous word documents were from microsoft word and i can open them in pages. i can read and write but can't save. i can save blank docs and templates but not pre-existing word documents.

Go File > Export > Word. Best is to first Save in native Pages format before exporting to Word.

ok thanks but maybe i didnt eleborate much here. i used to use ms word for everything but now im using pages and the old word documents i can open them in pages but i cant save them. any idea y? or how do i go about this? or the only option is stated above?
You want to save them as Word .doc, but not .pages?
Why?
Pages is not Word and whilst it opens and exports .doc files, that is not perfect due to the differences between the features in each.

pok if im were to save them in pages, how do i do it? i just click save but don't see any prompt on saving.
Mountain Lion AutoSaves it for you regularly.
If you want to save it under another name:
Menu > hold down the option key > File > Save As…
