After the recent thunderbolt update, my MacBook pro retina will not restart or shut sown. I have been in the habit of putting my Mac into sleep mode when not in use rather than a complete shut down. any ideas on how to fix this problem? I have tried very disk and repair permissions, however this has not solved the problem.
You can force a hardware power off by holding the power key down.
Run through this list of fixes and if it doesn't work, make a appointment for a Apple hardware repair.
I used the power button on the keyboard and the mac shut down. I waited for a minute and then restarted the Macbook and now everything is working properly. Thanks for your help.
Mine is a brand new 2013 Macbook Pro Retina with 1 TB SSD. Over $3,000. And it won't restart or shut down without force powering off. No special system apps installed, all apps force closed, nothing connected - it doesn't matter. Need help or must return it.
My MBP was exhibiting the same problem: wouldn't re-start and would only shutdown with power button shutdown.
Fixed it! I edit a lot of video and I had a SSD connected as the first external drive in a firewire chain. Disconnected the SSD and the MBP is back to normal. The SSD causes no problems when located further down the FW chain.

I am having the same problem! I bought mine this year. I didn't spend $3,000, but it wasn't cheap. Ever find a solution? I've already been on the phone with Apple support once, and it didn't fix the problem.
