iPad mobile (in vehicle) printing

I'm curious if anyone has any good solutions for printing from a vehicle. We are buying several new iPads for use in the field and need to be able to print from the service truck. I know AirPrint only prints over WiFi so that's probably not an option. Are there any good app/bluetooth printer combinations that anyone has worked with from a vehicle?

AirePrint via WiFi is the only way to print. There are printers that include their own router. It called adhock printing.

Apple doesn't supply a bluetooth print driver.

You might need a router with this solution.

Buy another box

"xPrintServer enables wireless printing for iOS devices such as iPads® and iPhones® using their native print menu. It eliminates the need to print through apps, install software, or email yourself documents for printing. And more importantly, you don't need to buy a new printer because xPrintServer works with more than 4,000 top brand USB and network printers. "

You have to check whether this box supports your printer

Thanks. I'm looking more into the ad hoc printing options but I had one more question after some though. Our field guys will have an iPhone and are planning to use it as a Wrieless Hotspot when they need internet for anything. Can the iPhone essentially be the router that a WiFi printer and iPad use to talk to each other or does the iPhone block communication between devices?

To answer your question, yes, the mobile hotspot can be used as the wifi router for a printer. You could find a way to power a large desktop printer that is airprint enabled. Failing that, I found a way to set up a mobile printer to work with iPad. I've created a parts list and a youtube video to help you get it set up. They can be found here:

You can AirPrint with any printer that's supported by CUPS

The Linux printing system

You could use a raspberry pi, a cheap credit card sized Linux computer ($25.00)

It can run of a cigarette lighter adaptor

Plus a USB wifi adaptor ($10.00)

You may need some sort of in car power adaptor to power the Pinter

Setup the raspberry pi as either a wireless access point or a adhoc connection with a dhcp server

Then on the iOS device, wireless settings find your raspberry pi and connect to it

If you've done everything correctly you'll be able to AirPrint to the printer
