You should be able to do approximately 1000 full charges with it and still get decent life between charges - so you should get a few years worth based on that usage. If/when you decide that you need a new battery then the current price for it in the US is $99 plus $6.95 postage.
From http://www.apple.com/batteries/ipad.html :
A properly maintained iPad battery is designed to retain up to 80% of its original capacity at 1000 full charge and discharge cycles. You may choose to replace your battery when it no longer holds sufficient charge to meet your needs.
The battery life depends on a lot of factors around your use, but there are plenty of original iPads still going strong. Obviously at some point, it will fail.
How long is he lifespan of the battery?
I use my ipad a couple of hours a day and use up around 40% or less every day.
Do you have reason to beleive the battery is failing? If so, what are the symptoms?
