Understanding docking ports and pins

I have an iPod nano 2nd gen, an iPod touch 2nd gen, and now An iPhone 4 and an iPad 3rd gen. I'm trying to figure out charging capabilities with these because the cords don't interchange and I'm trying to find docks for certain devices. Is it by pins and what are they? I believe the iPhone 4 is a 30 pin?
