macbook pro will not start after login

My MacBook Pro (late 2011) with Mountain Lion OS will not start up after my login. All I get after logging in is the spinwheel forever. It will start from guest user. PRAM reset doesn't help. Any suggestions?

iMac, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.2)

Adam,

Try a safe boot, power up holding the shift key note this will take longer so be patient hold the shift till you see the progress bar and try to login. If it works try logging out and logging in normally.

There are some updates availabe that you might want to install.

It won't let me safe boot. It just goes to the normal log in screen. I can get into the OS X Utilities and the disk utility shows no problems. Will restoring from a time machine backup possibly help? I've seen something about when trying to reset the NVRAM and PRAM is unsuccessful that a logic board battery may need to be replaced. Any thoughts there?

Adam,

Do a back up first.

Try a SMC reset: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964 battery you should not remove yourself.

Try creating a new admin account and see if that lets you in, if so check arond to see if all your files are intact and you can delete the old one. Do a back up first. If this does not work you may need to have it checked out at the Apple store or AASP. There may be a logic board issue.

I started the machine and ignored it for a while after signing in with my login password. After a while, a color wheel appeared and I moved the color wheel with the track pad. Then a dialog box popped up with something to the effect that an application was not closing, open or close. I opened it and my user desktop appeared. In the force quit screen, Finder was the only app open. I put it to sleep and was able to wake it and go back to my user screen after entering the password. Then I did a restart, and ended up with the same problem again, login and grey screen with apple logo and the grey spinwheel. Tried the SMC reset. No help. Could I have a virus? I would think if I was able to get into my desktop briefly, that the logic board is okay. Thoughts?

Adam,

Try a disk verification/repair, see the following link and read thru the embedded links as well. If the disk utility does not help you should try a reinstall of the OS. If after it still does not respond you may want to take it to the Apple Genius Bar they will diagnose it for free. If you have Apple Care you should still under warranty and should just take it in and let them deal with it.
