i bought a new ipod and before i got to register it, it was stolen. can i locate it with just the serial number?

Anyways you can't track if you only have the serial number.
If your iTouch is running on your apple id and have iCloud and the Find my iPhone activiate, you shouldn't have any problem locating an iTouch. Use the find my iphone app on a different iOS device (running on your apple id) or go to icloud.com and use the find my iphone app on there. and Yes, change all passwords used on that iDevice.

thanks i have been running the find my iphone app but it says it is not online. i went to that link but it says that it is registered under a diff id
The link won't help you except to give you the serial number which you say you already have. If the iPod won't appear in Find My iPhone, then there's no way you can track it. Notify the police and change passwords as suggested.

My ipod got stolen today, i tried using the find my app but my ipod comes up offline, im sorta screwed, my last option is to just use the serial / IEMI Number or whatever, i have both ready and written down, is there another way without find my ipod useless app ?
No, as was said before, there isn't. Your iPod doesn't have an IMEI number, by the way. That's a cellphone thing.

No. The SN will only help identify the iPod as yours IF it is recovered.
