after downloading the latest software from apple my earphone port does not function normlly

I downloaded the latest upgrade for my macbook pro late 2011 model and now my headphones recption port seems to be malfunctioning, online streamed content the sounds quality from any site is distorted or it will play through the computers speakers even if the headphones are plugged into the receptive port properly i have changed headphones same problem?
