Iphone 4 keeps going to speaker phone; however skype works

I have an iphone 4 where my calls keep going to speakerphone, however when i use skype, it works normally; I am not able to make a single call or receive due to this, it obviously cannot be a hardware issue as I make calls normally using skype. What could be the solution?
