Q: How to I make Aperture finishe vault update?

Hello

I am having trouble updating my main Aperture vault - it is simply stuck, always in the same place.

I have done repair and rebuild.

I have deleted the old vault and started on a new one.

None of this helps.

Since I am able to update my other vault, it would seem probably that there is something wrong with the library.

My main library is 141GB, just over 10.000 photos. The other is 129GB, 9.000 photos.

I do not use a referenced library.

I can see that I am not the only one with this problem, but so far, none of what others have tried has helped me.

I would greatly appreciate your advice.

    Gudrun,

can you tell, which image or video Aperture is trying to add to the vault, when the update gets stuck? There may be a corrupted video or image file in your Aperture library - maybe the file got corrupted or the filename contains special characters .  Try to isolate the offending item and to remove it from your Aperture library. If you create a new vault and look inside, when updating gets stuck (ctrl-click, show package contents) you might be able to tell what has been copied successfully and what should be copied next, by looking into the "Masters" folder.)

    Regards

Just to be sure - have you also done "Repair Permissions"? That is not automatically included with "Repair database".

    Thank you Léonie

I have been trying to isolate the problem since yesterday, dividing the library into years and making a new library for each year (2011, 21012 and 2013)
Library and vault for 11 and 13 are there, no problem, only 2012 left, I then got your message
(I did the repair thing also, it did not help.)

Now, I shall make a vault for 2012 and see what happens. Fingers crossed.

Thank you for your help, I do hope this works now.

PS Ctrl Click and show package content. Do I ctrl click the library icon in the folder or .. ? G

Thank you again for good advice.

It was the 2012 part that was the problem. When I did ctrl/click and looked at the package contents, it included som folders from 2011 and 2013, that were not supposed to be there and were not in the foldersystem visible in Aperture. I started by just exporting all 2012 folders into a new library and then made a 2012 vault. It worked out fine.

I try not to use any of the letters from my own language, anticipating that it might get me into problems at one time or other, but I found a few folders afterwards, that I have now changed, just to be sure.

Only thing left is to combine again, even though it is pretty easy to go between libraries, it takes time and at the moment, preparing an exhibition, I need to have at least 2012 and 2013 together.

Again, thanks again for your good advice - as always.

    You are welcome, Gudrun.

You know, that you can merge Aperture libraries by importing one into the other (File > Import > Library), don't you?

I'd start with one of your libraries and import one after the other into it.

I'd keep your single year vaults as backup, until you are sure, that the reunited library is o.k. and contains all the images.

Yup, I knew that But I wanted to start fresh with a new name and as I recall, changing a library name might get me into trouble.

The vaults are on an external drive and I will keep them, even after all is finished. Everything should be on Time Machine as well, I will check as I go along.

Thanks again, good to have a helping hand "down south".
