We're going on an Alaska cruise in a few weeks and have been warned about the risk of unknowingly incurring excessive roaming charges on our cell phones. I still need to be able to make and receive calls and would like to use it to check my e-mail. Any advise on how to prevent surprises?

You can make sure data roaming is turned off in settings...it should be off by default. Have you looked to see what plans AT&T offers?

Data Roaming is "Off" but I've read that some apps can turn it on without my knowledge. I'm a low-tech guy with few apps. Wonder if I am at risk.

You are correct not to rely on that data roaming switch. There are only two ways to insure no nasty surprises: Use Airplane mode or get a plan from AT&T. You can turn WiFi back on in Airplane mode, but obviously no calls. Thus, for you, a plan from AT&T might be your best option.

BTW, Alaska is actually part of the US. There are no roaming charges in Alaska.

The OP is worried about connecting to Canadian carriers unintentionally.
A good thing to be aware of. I actually take advantage of it near the border on the Canadian side, where I can usually connect to AT&T.
How do you avoid unreasonable roaming charges when traveling in Canada and Alaska while still being able to use iPhone (on AT&T service) for limited phone calling and receiving?
