    Welcome to Apple Support Communities

You can buy the cable you want. If you have them separated, go for the 2 m. Thunderbolt cable, and if they are together, go for the 0.5 m Thunderbolt cable. However, note that the 0.5 m. cable may not be enough, so it's better to go for the 2 m. Thunderbolt cable.

Note that, to be able to use the cable, you must have two Mid 2011 or newer iMacs that include Thunderbolt. Older iMacs haven't got it

You cannot connect a 17" iMac to a 21.5" iMac via Thunderbolt. The last 17" iMac made predates Thunderbolt ports by several years. You'll need to either use Ethernet or Firewire.
