When inserting a memory card and cliking on an image I get the message that the data image converter has stopped working. What is the image converter. The images open perfectly in PSE and Lightroom.

Are you using a Sony Camera? There is a Data Image Converter provided by Sony for the raw developement. If you have older Sony software installed, you may want to update it to the newest version or to uninstall it, if you do not use it:
