You could have a 1st gen (not sure, just guessing).

Do you have button for the volume control on the side of your iPod? If no, it's a 1st gen.

A 2G to 4.2.1. Requires iTunes version 10.X. If a Mac it requires OSX 10.5.8 or later.
The 1G does not have volume buttons on the upper left side.
