Hold the shift key down and relaunch Safari.
Click Safari in the menu bar.
From the drop down select "Reset Safari".

Checkmark the box for "Show Develop menu in menu bar".
Develop menu will appear in the Safari menu bar.
Click Develop and select "Empty Caches" from the dropdown.
Turn off Extensions if any, and launch Safari.
Safari > Preferences > Extensions

Resetting Safari and emptying caches are both unnecessary. Holding down the shift key while opening Safari will be sufficient to prevent Safari from re-opening the page that was open when it quit. Then just don't go back to that site.

Does this "virus" leave any residual effects on your IPad? I just had this happen and went to settings, safari, delete cookies and that seemed to have worked. Just wondering if I need to do anything else.

Happened to my daughter ipad mini.
I restarted it, went to:
Settings > Safari > Clear History, Cookies, Cache.
It was fine after that.
