add airport express to Netgear wireless router to extend range

I am trying add an airport express to my existing home wifi to extend range. My wireless router is Netgear DGN2000. I am using iPad for configuration. I have been able to complete the configuration process using my iPad but the airport is not operating and I have no boost.

Apple uses proprietary designs with the goal in mind of only allowing AirPort routers to "extend" the signal wirelessly from another AirPort router.

It would be extremely unlikely that the AirPort Express would be able to extend a signal from a 3rd party router unless you can connect the AirPort Express using a wired Ethernet connection.

If you need to "extend" wirelessly, then another Netgear product would be your best bet compatibility wise.

Thanks for the clarification.

When you say that the AirPort is "not working", can you provide some more details about this?

Is the power light coming on?

What color is the light?

Is it flashing?

Are there error messages?

If yes, what are they?

Please remember that we cannot see your network or your iPad. We only know as much about your problem as you can tell us.

As I complete the config process on the iPad I get a message that the process is complete but the LED never turns green (is slow flashing amber) and it destroys my wireless connection to the ipad and my iphone. Destroy means is knocks those device off. I then unplug the airport, push the WPS button on the Netgear and get my connection back on my pad and phone.

You must use the option to "create a new wireless network" when you set up the Express.

Use the same wireless network name and password that you are using for the Netgear network if you want everything to act like one big network. I am assuming that the Netgear router is using WPA/WPA2 Personal security settings as that is what the Express will use by default.

If you are accepting the "extend" option when you try to setup the Express, that setting is for connecting to an Apple network. It won't work with other routers.

I followed your instruction to create a new network and it all seemed to go well. To test if I was getting thru to the web on the AE I turned off the wireless radio on the Netgear and yes I can surf. However, the LED on the AE is still slowly flashing amber. Is that cause for concern? Also, I can see the IP address for the AE on my Netgear configuration but when I try to access the AE with a browser I get "webpage is not available"
