How can I play a dvd on my Mac and display it through Apple TV

The Apple TV is not a DVD player, in order to view on your TV via the Apple TV you would need it streamed. The DVD player program on Mac is blocked from airplay/mirroring due to copyright. You cannot transfer to the computer to stream via ATV without breaking copy protection. The legality is very relevant and even if you do not wish to discuss that, discussions of this nature are not permitted as per the terms you agreed to upon startup.

Because some of us don't own an external DVD player. In my case I'm playing the DVD on my computer and would like to see it play on a bigger screen (i.e., the TV). I believe that's what the folks here are also trying to do.

I emigrated from NA to Europe and would like to continue viewing the legally purchased DVDs I brought with me.

The iMac is multi-region but not readily compatible with family viewing.

As already stated the Apple TV is not intended for this purpose. A DVD player hardly adds much clutter nor takes up much space. You purchased the physical media and you only have the right to view it in that way, breaking the copy protection in order to create a digital copy is not legal (and regardless we cannot discuss such things here).

NA encoded DVDs cannot be played on Europen region players.

Multi region DVD players are not sold in Ireland.

I am not looking to break copy protection or to make digital copies, mererly to play the physical disc in the multi-region player of my iMac and watch on my HDTV.

I have no complaint about or desire to discuss the legality of the situation. It is quite off point.

Having said that - "The legality is very relevant . . ." is gratuitous. I am aware of the legalities and forum rules and as I already said I do not consider breaking copy protection to be an option. I would have thought it clear that was in light of said legalities. It is something I could easily have done months ago otherwise.

Perfectly willing to let you have the last word, but first I want to thank you for your insistence on bringing up the question of legal vs illegal activity. I woke up this morning with the startling realization that US law is only the final word in the US! I will proceed post haste to explore options under EU law.

Then you should know that Canada's Supreme Court has specifically ruled that digital backups of DVDs for personal use is perfectly legal. Ditto Australia. Nothing loopholish about it. I expect the EU takes a similarly enlightened approach.

Not commercial dvd's, which require the breaking of copy protection. The software used is not considered legal and will also introduce a lot of other issues. Regardless you will not obtain help here, it is against the terms. Please refrain from continuing this discussion

Logical but it won't work - DVD player output will be a grey checkerboard pattern.

Apple apps prevent Airplay of DVD content at low level presumably for some copy protection reason.

VLC player is believed to work.

That wasn't made clear and as this was a discussion about viewing a DVD via Apple TV the matter of the legality and forum rules were still relevant.

Perhaps you should have made your points clear to begin with and read through the discussion so such things didn't have to be repeated. I also suggest you cease from responding.

Don't reside in the US and wasn't only referring to such laws. If you are trying to find a loophole in order to break copy protection then that shows the initial response was correct.
