Back to Snow Leopard in 2013

I've got a Early 2008 MacBook. Since I installed Lion two years ago, it started to struggle a little bit in performance. My question is: we are in 2013, is it recommended to downgrade to Snow Leopard, to get better performance? Or to stay with Lion for better compatibility with the new apps?

MacBook, Mac OS X (10.7.5)

Depending on what you do, 4 GB is considered a realistic minimum - if you do graphics work, or edit/render video, then (much) more would be better. Snow leopard was/is a very stable system - unless you need/want to new things in Lion (such as iCloud, etc), then you could just revert. It is a bit of work though having to erase the drive, etc.
