my iphone is not being updated or sinking correctly with my computer. What should I do?

My computer contacts and calendar do not cync properly. Can you please give me steps to figure out what I can do? example is: I go to my phone under contacts and try and look up someone and they are missing. When I go onto my computer gmail contacts the contact is there.
