I have an iMac, OS 10.6.8. The HD failed and was replaced by Apple and10.6.8 was downloaded onto the new HD but the symbol for the it doesn't show up on the desktop. I was told it would. I went into systems preference and then the startup disk but I can't find a way of transferring the HD symbol to the desktop. I can't find its logo anywhere else.
Choose Preferences from the Finder menu, click on General, and set it to show hard disks.

Finder > Finder Preferences > General and check the box for Hard Disk.
If that doesn't work, try right (Control) clicking on your Desktop and selecting "Clean Up By" Kind
Firstly, I cannot find the Finder Preferences. Secondly, when I control click on desktop I get what you show but the CleanUp By with horizontal pointer is not there-just Clean Up. What OS version do you have? I have 10.6.8.
Click on the icon in the Dock with the smiling face, and then on Finder at the very top of the computer's screen. One of the options in the menu which appears will be Preferences.

Absolutely on target! Only through serendipity would I have found out how to do it. That's why I'm still a 4 after a hundred years.
Don't go away, I still have problems finding material that I thought was transferred to my external drive, i.e., e-mails, and bookmarks of my wife.
