Question

how do I create a movie in mp4 on my mac

My dvd player will not play a .mov file so I am trying to create a .mp4 file of the same data to see if that works. Can I do this with iDVD on my mac? Any assistance would be sensational thanks. Shaun.

If you want to watch a movie on a DVD player, you need to do it using a burn software (it will author the video into a format that any DVD player read). So yes, iDVD is excellent - just choose a theme and import your movie, then burn it to a DVD.
