connection to amplifier

I have an 2007 iMac INTEL that I'd like to connect up to an amplifier and use as a home entertainment system...my amplifier(PANASONIC) has a digital input...would a digital output to the amplifier from the iMac be better than an analog output from the headphone jack? If yes how do you go about it? Thanks
