I have an iPad 4th gen. iOS is updated. An iPhone 4S. Again updated iOS. iCloud is on.

Why am I not able to text from my ipad?

I text from iPhone. They are synced devices. I can send and receive emails from ipad and iPhone.

I have heard you have to go thru icloud to set texting up...how? I have heard you have to do this the first time, when you are near your own wifi.  Is there any truth to either? Note I am visiting family from out of town & no where near my state & own wifi.

In iPad settings I have iCloud on but not the backup. It scares me to say yes to that bc it warns that if I do I can no longer sync to my home computer? What does that mean?

Thanks in advance for your replies
