My finder window when in columns view is stuck and will not display in alphabetic order. Choosing "arrange by none" or "arrange by name" results in some order I cannot determine--perhaps date modified. I somehow caused this to happen, I think, but I can't get it to work properly. Can anybody help?

Doesn't work. Under View>Arrange by all the options seem to work properly except None and Name.
Log into a newly created admin user account and see if the problem persists.
The problem does not persist in other user accounts. So, what file do I need to trash to get it to work?
Most likely ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist. If that isn't it, make a new folder on the desktop, move half of the items in Preferences to it, and check if it recurs. Continue this process until narrowing it down to a single file.

Follow Niel's advice. A starting point is to see which preference files are shown in the new account. That will narrow down the search, since it has to be one of those.
