Only Late 2009 and newer iMacs have got a sensor in the hard disk. Read > http://blog.macsales.com/10146-apple-further-restricts-upgrade-options-on-new-im acs
The early 2008 iMac does have a thermal sensor for the hard drive, but it attaches to the outside of the drive. It doesn't use a sensor built into the drive mechanism/circuitry.
Regards.
They all have sensors in the disk, which you can test with the SMART tools. But it was only the later models that use that sensor instead of an external one. My 2008 iMac's disk temperature sensor tells me it's a balmy 41°C inside the housing. But the iMac's cooling logic doesn't use that in these older models.
Arguments about Apple restricting DIY options or user-serviceability assume that Apple makes the hard drives or has them made to their specifications, which would allow them to order the internal sensors to be accessible through an external cable. I think an awareness of Apple's market share disproves that. Most manufacturers of any durable good you can think of has been moving away from repairability. Home appliances, cars, you name it. It's not just Apple.
