Help--I have a virus

I have something wrong with Safari. It keeps opening tabs. I downloaded ClamXav and scanned. I put infected files in trash, but it says I have virus detected: 2287382. Can someone tell me what to do? I have 10.6.8. Thank you, Karen

It's most unlikely it's a virus. You'll have to report back just what ClamX found, but it probably found Windows only malware in mail, or it's just making an "educated guess" about possible malware. This is what it usually finds. If it was something found in Mail, you do not want to trash anything.

See MadMacs0 on using ClamX in the link below. I think you have a Firefox problem and then ClamX probably found something competely unrelated and probably harmless, but I can't say for certain without knowing more.

Why don't you describe the Firefox problem in more detail.

Which Firefox is this, what version? The latest is 21. What are the tabs it keeps opening? Are they previously closed ones? More information needed. Don't know if it applies to your situation, but check out this Mozilla article. And I would ignore the malware section, as that's probably designed for Windows users of Firefox.

Also see the recommendation to reset Firefox here. But warning, go to your home folder library>Application Support and make a backup of the Firefox folder before doing this. Option-click and drag that folder to the Desktop. That will make a backup copy.

There are some other suggestions in that new link. Post back if you don't understand how to proceed.
