When I select a document and mouse over "Open with' all the apps that can open that document show up fine but there at least four of each app listed. Sometimes it take 5 or 10 seconds because the list is so long. How can I remedy this?

I tried the terminal solution you suggested. It did not seem to work. Should restart my Mac?

Are you actually ln 10.4.2? Why not update to 10.4.11?
Repair permissions then restart.
I followed this path and it does exist. It's a unix exe file with read only permissions.
/System/Library/Frameworks/ApplicationServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/L aunchServices.framework/Versions/Current/Support/lsregister -kill -r -domain system -domain local -domain user
I wonder if I changed permissions then deleted it?
No...that was a typo. Using 10.4.11
I have tried repairing permissions before to fix my problem... no help.
I think your system needs some TLC! Try an Archive and Install:

I looked on ebay for tiger install disk. It's not worth the money for the problem. I guess I'll just live with it.

Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions...
Reset Launch Services...

PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.

Call Apple Customer Support 1-800-767-2775, provide the Serial Number and specifications of the Mac, and for a reasonable fee, they will supply a replacement set of system discs (if available).
The discs will be for the original version of the OS that was pre-installed when the Mac was manufactured.
