Quicktime 7 OS status error -50 when opening a movie.

Have reinstalled quicktime 7, think there's some conflict. Have tried rereinstalling, updating, copying application from another computer. But quicktime 7 just won't play anything! Think there's a file corrupted somewhere.... not sure where to check. any thoughts greatly appreciated.
