iTunes will not connect to Airplay - "network connection timed out"

I have Windows 7. My PC is connected to an Airport Express 802.11n (1st generation). My stereo is connected to an Airport Express 802.11n (2nd generation). My PC runs the most recent version of iTunes (11.0.3). Until I updated iTunes today, I had no problem streaming music through iTunes to my stereo. Now, nothing. When I attempt to play a song over Airplay, the song does not play/progress. Both of the Airport Expresses are fully up-to-date as well.


The problem is not the 2nd generation Airport Express because I am able to stream music from YouTube on my iPhone to the 2nd generation Airport, which is connected to the stereo, and listen to the song over my stereo. Thus, I believe the problem is how the new version of iTunes (run on Windows 7) and my 1st generation Airport Express are communicating.


Now when I try to play a song in iTunes through the stereo, an Airplay dialog box pops up with a green progress bar that loads and loads and loads, never completing, saying "Cannot connect to (the 1st Generation Airport)"


Then another box pops up that says: An error occured while connecting to the Airplay device. The network connection timed out.


Today is the day the music died 😟


Any ideas? Do I have to buy a new Airport?

Update: I uninstalled and reinstalled iTunes twice, but that didn't do the trick either. I also spoke with Apple Care, who was also stumped. They think it might be a hardware issue (but were probably just giving up on working with me because I haven't paid the $50). Still seems awfully coincidental that my Airport (1st Gen - about 4 years old) would stop being able to stream music through iTunes simultaneously with the iTunes update...


Anybody have any suggestions?

I had the same issue and got the same error connecting to my iHome iW1 wireless speakers after upgrading from iTunes v10 to v11 running Windows 7 x64. After troubleshooting, it looks like a Firewall issue with the latest version of iTunes. If I disable the Windows Firewall, Airplay connects to the wireless speakers without a problem. I have tried enabling the recommended ports but no luck yet. It only works if I disable Windows Firewall, which is not acceptable obvisously.

Have you considered reverting to the older version of iTunes? I mean, if it was doing everything you needed it to do without any problems it's probably best to let things stand.


Have you considered installing Windows 8?


You may need to do a hard reset on your AirPort Express(ses).


And, in my opinion mixing PC and Apple products together, Fugeddaboutit

I will have to restore a backup copy of my iTunes library to downgrade from v11 back to v 10 because the two are not compatible.


It also has nothing to do with the version of Windows. The problem has been reported with both Windows 7 and Windows 8.


It stopped working because of a change in iTunes and has nothing to do with Apple vs. Windows but Apple needs to either fix tghe issue in v11 of iTunes or release what changes need to be made to the Firewall settings.


Apple OS users are also reporting similar issues related to Firewall settings and IPv6.

I found this on a forum and it has just worked for me (Windows Vista, iTunes 11.0.5.5) (and on previous ocassions). I have a Sony laptop.


- Open the “Control Panel.”

- Under “Security” click on “Allow a program through Windows Firewall.”

- Press continue.

- A new window will appear. Near the bottom middle, click on “Add port.”

- Under name, type in “iTunes” – I don’t think the name really matters but this is what I have been doing, and it has worked.

- Under port number, enter 6002.

- Finally, make sure you choose “UDP” instead of “TCP”.

- Click OK. Try connecting to your remote speakers in iTunes or starting up a tune.

I had this problem connecting my Windows 7 PC to my Cambridge Audio Minx Air speakers. Airplay worked fine via iPhone and iPad but not via iTunes on Windows, kept getting network time out and I could only solve it by rebooting my modem each time (very annoying).


On Windows 7, your tip to change the iTunes from TCP to UDP worked first time, great!


For windows 7 users follow this:


Control Panel -> Windows Firewall -> Advanced Settings -> Inbound Rules

Find iTunes in the list and click on Properties

In Protocols and Ports tab, change TCP to UDP. I had Local and Remote ports set to 'All Ports' and I didnt' change this.


Restarted iTunes and connected to the speakers first time.

Like you, I just made the TCP to UDP change. I didn't change the ports. Now it works fine. It is a bit frustrating that this occurred right after an iTunes upgrade. Another laptop that has not been upgraded to the latest iTunes version has been using Airplay seamlessly all along. It's asking a lot on Apple's part to have to dig down so far into firewall settings to make things work. But at least they do now. Thanks to all for the suggestions.
