There are a few other things to try as well.
Look at the opening where the iPad dock connector cable attaches to the iPad. Some users claim that cleaning the port with a soft toothbrush (carefully) will return the volume slider to the iPad and bring the sound back.
Inserting and removing headphones or earbuds a few times.
Reboot the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons until the Apple Logo appears on the screen.
Reset all settings. Settings>General>Reset>Reset all settings.
If nothing else will work, consider restoring the iOS software.

If all of that fails, then a trip to an Apple Store for an evaluation of the iPad is in order.
