Q: Intermittent Internet connectivity - network is fine..

Hi all. I have an iMac from early 2009 (running 10.8) that is having internet connectivity issues that seem to be getting more frequent/ worse.

Under normal use while browsing the internet or streaming video or music etc. the iMac will drop off the network and not let me get back on until I reboot. It seems that restarting the modem/ router has no effect most of the time.

I have other computers on the network and they all have flawless wireless connectivity which leads me to believe it's a hardware or software issue specific to the iMac. Can anyone point me in the right direction to start diagnosing the problem? Thank you all in advance for any help.

iMac, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.2)

    Try the basics first:

Change your router channel number.  Most times this works & is all you have to do.

Disconnect & reconnect your modem.  unplug it for about 10 seconds.  Plug it back in.  Do the same for Apple’s routers.  Wait for everything to reboot.

    System Preferences>Network

    Click the Assist Me button.

In the next window that pops up, click the Diagnostic button & do the necessary.

Research Knowledge Base for network problems that pertain to the OS that is currently installed on your computer.   See these basic networking KB Articles:  http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1401 AirPort troubleshooting guide

Thank you for your very prompt response. I got home this morning and was ready to start working down your list and wouldn't you know it, no internet problems at all on the iMac. I am changing the router channel as soon as I am able to download some software that will tell me what channels the connections near to me are on.

I have repeatedly tried updating the iMac and keep recieving an error. 1004 or something like that. I am not with the computer now so I can't check but that is another problem I need to address.
