You may take your MBP to an Apple store for a definitive diagnosis and they should be able to replace the cable for you without an exorbitant fee.

If I understand your situation correctly, a Time Machine backup would suffice allowing you to reinstall user data. If you choose to clone the HDD, Target Disk mode would be another method for reinstalling user data.
