Ahh, I need to go from 10.5.8 to 10.6.8.

To upgrade from 10.5.x to 10.6.8, you need to purchase Snow Leopard on disk:

Install that, then run Software Update and install all available updates to bring it up to 10.6.8.

That wouldn't be necessary after running Software Update. You could download and manually install the combo update instead of allowing Software Update to take care of that, but that would be a larger download, and on a newly-installed system, shouldn't be necessary.

The Combo will work after you buy and install Snow Leopard. It's not for use with 10.5.8, Leopard.

Because you have 10.5.8 (I think, you mention both 10.6.8 and 10.5.8)

Assuming that you actually are using 10.5.8 (Leopard) you need to upgrade (paid) to 10.6.8 Snow Leopard (only available on disk from Apple) then if you choose (and if your Mac meets the hardware requirements) onward to 10.7 or 10.8. (available from the App Store, online)

OK, currently there are no updates for 10.6.8, I have no ability to see the future so that may change over time. Currently there are 2 upgrades available, 10.7 and 10.8.
