Apple regard the Original iPhone as 'obselete' nowadays, which gives me the feeling that they cannot help you out. This is a shame for the many people with the original iphone experiencing problems with it.

There are many independent phone repair shops and you could take it there to see what they could do....

Apple will be sunsetting support for the original iPhone on June 11th, 2013.  If you want/need it repaired do so before that date.  Out of Warranty replacement is $149 US for the device.

Frankly, the device is ancient, replace it.  Put the Out of Warranty replacement cost towards a newer device.
