Trnasferring Files from P to Mac

I am switching from PC to Mac. My PC runs Vista. My Mac is running OS X 10.8.3. I have tried using Migration Assistant to transfer all of my files but the PC keeps disconnecting and won't reconnect. I shut off the automatic windows update on my PC as directed, to no avail. Any suggestions?
