upgrade stuck

Safari upgrade 6.0.4 will not complete. Cannot close App Store without a force quit, cannot shut down computer without a force shutdown. Any suggestions?

Mac Pro, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.3)

The upgrade bar in "App Store" was almost finished, but it would never complete...days went by. Indeed, Safari version 6.0.4 was in my applications folder, and it would launch and appear in the menubar, but you could not get a window, even if you went to "new window"...none would appear. Basically, it was there in my applications folder, but it wouldn't work. I trashed it, and then tried getting a Safari 6.0.4 installer from elsewhere...a total new install of 6.0.4 instead of an update to the Safari that used to exist on my machine. Trouble is, it won't install either, because it says "waiting for other installations to complete", yep, it's waiting on the Safari update to complete, and it'll never complete, and I can't figure out how to stop the attempted transfer and delete it either.

If you haven't already rebooted since this started, try that. Otherwise, I suggest the following.

Back up all data.

Boot into Recovery mode. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, follow the prompts to reinstall the OS. You don't need to erase the boot volume, and you won't need your backup unless something goes wrong. If your Mac was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you’ll need the Apple ID and password you used to upgrade, so make a note of those before you begin.

Today's OS upgrade to 10.8.4 was an option, and surprisingly, the stuck Safari upgrade did not hold up everything...it wasn't even on the list anymore. So the OS upgrade not only fixed my primary problem, but it also upgraded Safari to 6.0.5.

Safari continues to not work; will not open a window, and when I try and make it do so it crashes. Still, this problem is MUCH preferable to my previous problem...I'm so relieved.

So, anyone have a solution for Safari crashing and not opening a window? It'd be nice if Safari worked, I prefer it to all the other browsers I've tried while having this problem. But Hallelujah, so glad the primary problem disappeared!
