TROUBLES WITH SYNCING IPHONE 3G

Hi, I downloaded the latest version of Itunes and need to update very old I.O.S. on iphone 3G to I.O.S. 4.2.1. Before tryed to back up contact and photo album

but syncing iphone is non-stop in procedure. Please help me how to resolve problems.
