ExFAT external drive permissions problem

I don't think exFAT has permissions.

If you Get Info on it, is the drive marked to ignore ownership, or is it grayed out (which I think it should)?

How about what it says in the Permissions section?

Run the Disk Utility's Repair Disk command on it; sometimes, a volume with damaged directory structures will be mounted as read-only.

A quick google confirms the lack of permissions.

Maybe it neeeds a repair. I'd back it up, first, if possible. It may be a directory problem on the whole device.

Here's a snap of the GetInfo. I can only read. No other options.

Disk Utility offers only Verify Disk, all other options are greyed out. Cannot erase and start over, that option too is greyed out.

What kind of drive is it?

Does it have a write lock switch?

I can't confirm this but someone suggested that some USB stick drives will auto-lock if they detect impending failures.

The dates are all messed up, so it could be so corrupted it is unusable.

Did Verify report any problems?

I've tried everything I can think of to reformat this disk. Originally it was formatted for MSDOS but reformatted for the Mac. I can access the files on the drive but I don't delete them or erase the drive and reformat. I can't partition the drive. Everything is greyed out. I've tried booting to recovery drive and trying to reformat it there wihtout success (still all greyed out). At a loss to understand. Verify reports it to be okay:

I was having the exact same problem with my PNY micro SDXC 128gb. It was read only and I couldn't write, erase or repair it. I was using the micro to standard adapter that came with it. However I had another adapter from an old micro SD I had back in the day. I swapped out the adapter and BINGO, write permissions now appear.

Yes, same exact results for me.

I got a 64GB TF card formatted ExFAT that uses an SD adapter that I use in my digital camera If I plug it into my MBP card slot with the adapter, it grants me 'read only' permission. If I take the same exact card and use a TF -> USB adapter in the USB port, it works fine with full permissions.

I double checked the tiny 'Lock' switch on the TF to SD adapter, and it's not locked.

So yeah, something funky about the adapters. I wonder if this is an Apple bug, or a card mfg bug?

Either way, we have a work-around for now, I guess.
