However many times I try going to the iStore, no "authorise this computer" option is offered.

That option is not in the iTunes Store. It's in the iTunes menu: Store > Authorize This Computer...

Thank you very much indeed! I feel rather stupid, but at least I can listen to my music now.
I have this problem too, but I have tried to access the menu following the instructions for authorising in Windows 7 and 8, and the menu just doesn't come up when I hit ALT. Is there anything else I can do? Thank you

ctrl B turns on the menus.
