Can No Longer Scan With Canon MG5220 But Printing Works Fine

Hello,

I have not had luck with Canon so hoping my Apple community can come through for me 🙂 Here is my problem. I have a Canon MG5220 "all-in-one" that I am able to print to just fine. I was able to scan a year ago but something has changed and I am no longer able to scan. I have all the Canon software and the error I get is as follows when using MP Navigator 4.0 EX:

"Error 2.10 - Cannot communicate with scanner. Cable may be disconnected or scanner is turned off. Check status."

I have deleted and re-added my printer several times but that has not done anything. I believe there was a time in the past when it was scanning properly that I had a separate printer icon under "Printers" on left of "Print and Scan" sscreen for the scanner but not sure (can someone confirm?). Regardless, I only have one now.

My printer is connected as follows: MG5220 is wireless to my FiOS Actiontec router and then hardwired Ethernet to iMac. I have turned Wi-Fi status on and off o Mac and that has not made a difference.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks,

epie

Open Finder and navigate to Applications > Canon Utilities > IJ Network Scanner Selector EX and open the Canon IJ Network Scanner Selector EX utility. This utility will search your local network for the MG5220 and if found, should show something like below.

User uploaded file

If the MG5220 is found, ensure that it is selected - as opposed to "Do Not Use" - and then press the OK button.

Now open MP Navigator and select the Preferences (as shown below)

User uploaded file

From the Preferences window, with the General tab selected, ensure you have the MP5200 Series Network set as shown below (which is for my wireless MG6250).

User uploaded file

If it is set, press the OK button to close the Preferences window and then see if you can scan.

Hello PAHU,

I have checked what you instructed and all those settings have are correct on my Mac as you show. When I try to scan I get the small "ScanGear" window pop-up that says "Checking for Scanners" with an exclamation point and then the error I reference in my orignal e-mail. Thanks for trying to help. I have a strange one here.

Thanks for that image. With the MG listed as a MAC (Network) address instead of its name, as I have shown above, then this would indicate that Bonjour has been disabled on the MG.

You can check this on the MG by selecting the Setup menu and then selecting Device Settings > LAN settings > Other settings > Bonjour settings > Enable/disable Bonjour. Is this set to Enable?

If not, select Enable and then see if you can scan. Note that you may need to use the Network Scanner Selector again and then check the MP Navigator preferences.

At this stage I would connect the Mac to the MG via USB cable. You can then open MP Navigator and change the preferences to use the USB connected MG (this will be the one shown just as the model - no Network or alpha-numeric characters). Then see if you can scan with this connection. If this works, then it at least it suggests that MP Navigator is working and that there is some other cause for your symptom.

So....this is very interesting. I connected via USB and changed to USB MG in Preferences and scanning worked. I then disconnected the USB to give it a shot again wirelessly and suddently I got this screen to pop-up:

This was a new pop-up that I wasnt getting previously when trying to print wirelessly . I clicked "allow" and it printed wirelessy!!! Not sure what happened here but looks like the USB connection gave it a jump start. I am going to power computer and printer on and off a coouple of times today and report back to make sure this now "sticks" and wil let you know. Fingers crossed.......

This window is appearing because you have the built-in firewall enabled. This setting is located in System Preferences > Security > Firewall. You must have turned it on because it is off by default. And usually when you do turn it on, any application that needs to gain access to your Mac will generate a popup as you have shown.

If you turned on the firewall by mistake you could turn it off. But now that MP Navigator has been added to the exceptions list you could also leave if enabled.

Thanks PAHU. Turns out having the firewall on was the issue. For some reason, though I still get the Deny/Allow pop-up every time I cycle power on and off even though it is in the exceptions list. Not a big deal though. I can live with that or like you said I cold just turn the firewall off but do like the extra security.

Thanks again for working with me on this!
